The Royal Rumble returns to Phoenix after a 2019 night that changed WWE
Before Becky Lynch walked out of WrestleMania 35 carrying both women’s championships, she left Phoenix on one good leg with an entire company moving around her.
Before Seth Rollins conquered Brock Lesnar, he survived Braun Strowman on the edge of the ring at Chase Field.
That is the legacy of the 2019 Royal Rumble in Phoenix. It was not simply a stadium show filled with countdowns and surprise entrances. It was the night two WrestleMania winners emerged from the desert and WWE’s future began taking shape.
Now, the countdown is starting again.
WWE announced that the Royal Rumble will return to Arizona in February 2027. The 40th edition of the event will take place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, bringing one of WWE’s biggest nights back to the Valley for the first time in eight years.
It will be Arizona’s third Royal Rumble, following the 2013 event at what was then US Airways Center and the 2019 spectacle at Chase Field. An exact date and ticket-sale information have not yet been announced.
The venue will be different in 2027. The roster will be different. The company itself has changed dramatically.
But the shadow of 2019 still hangs over the event.
WWE made its Chase Field debut on Jan. 27, 2019, staging the first Royal Rumble ever held inside a baseball stadium. WWE announced a crowd of 48,193, transforming the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks into a massive wrestling arena for a night built around uncertainty.
No moment captured that feeling better than Becky Lynch’s arrival.
Lynch had already lost to Asuka in a SmackDown Women’s Championship match earlier in the evening. She was not one of the 30 announced entrants in the women’s Royal Rumble and appeared to be leaving Phoenix with her WrestleMania path closed.
Then Lana was unable to compete.
Lynch walked out, persuaded WWE official Fit Finlay to let her take Lana’s No. 28 position and stepped into the match with Charlotte Flair and Nia Jax still standing between her and WrestleMania.
Jax was eliminated but attacked Lynch afterward, leaving her struggling on an injured knee. Officials appeared prepared to stop her. Lynch refused to leave. She returned to the ring and eliminated Flair to win the match.
It felt less like a surprise victory than a crowd forcing WWE to accept what it already knew. Becky Lynch had become impossible to deny.
That night in Phoenix ultimately carried Lynch into the first women’s main event in WrestleMania history. At WrestleMania 35, she defeated Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair in a Winner Take All match to leave MetLife Stadium with both the Raw and SmackDown women’s championships.
The men’s Royal Rumble delivered its own chaos.
Jeff Jarrett appeared at No. 2. Johnny Gargano, Pete Dunne and Aleister Black entered from WWE’s developmental brands. Nia Jax attacked R-Truth and stole the final position, becoming only the fourth woman to enter a men’s Royal Rumble match.
Through all of it, Seth Rollins endured.
Rollins entered at No. 10 and survived being driven through an announce table by Bobby Lashley. The final fight came down to Rollins and Braun Strowman, trading shots on the apron with nothing separating victory from the stadium floor.
One final Stomp sent Strowman down and Rollins toward WrestleMania.
Like Lynch, Rollins finished the journey by winning championship gold. He defeated Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 35 to capture the Universal Championship.
The rest of the 2019 card now feels like a photograph from another version of WWE. Ronda Rousey defended the Raw Women’s Championship against Sasha Banks. Brock Lesnar survived Finn Bálor. Daniel Bryan retained the WWE Championship against AJ Styles after the surprise return of Rowan. Shane McMahon and The Miz became tag team champions.
Yet the lasting image belongs to the two Rumble winners.
Lynch and Rollins entered Phoenix searching for a path. They left with the road to WrestleMania running directly through them.
The 2027 Royal Rumble will arrive on a larger stage. State Farm Stadium has already hosted WrestleMania, a Super Bowl and some of the biggest sporting events ever held in Arizona. Now it will host the 40th Royal Rumble and another pair of 30-person matches with WrestleMania championship opportunities waiting for the survivors.
Nobody knows who will be standing in the ring when the final countdown ends. That uncertainty is the point.
Phoenix already knows what can happen when the lights go out, the clock reaches zero and the right person walks through the curtain.
In 2019, the Royal Rumble did not simply come through Arizona.
It changed the direction of WWE before leaving town.
