Rudy Rodgers Was Buried, but What Crawled Out May Be Worse

Alex Salyers didn’t simply defeat Rudy Rodgers at AWF Summer Explosion.

He buried him.

When the lid closed on their casket match, it felt like the end of something. The end of the rivalry. The end of Rodgers’ pursuit of Salyers. Maybe even the end of the Rudy Rodgers AWF had known.

Judging by what appeared against King Khan at Collateral Damage, that last part might be true.

Rodgers ultimately lost his challenge for the AWF Unleashed Championship, but the result didn’t tell the entire story. He walked into the match looking different and carrying himself differently. There was less performance and more menace. It was as if the man Salyers put inside that casket never came back out—and something less controlled took his place.

That version of Rodgers didn’t win the championship, but it looked dangerous.

Losses can expose wrestlers. They can strip away confidence, reveal limitations and send someone tumbling down the card. But the right loss can also remove the last restraint keeping something darker buried.

Salyers may have done exactly that.

Rodgers has always had the experience, toughness and willingness to make a match uncomfortable. What appeared against Khan was something else. There was an edge to him that didn’t feel manufactured. This wasn’t simply new gear or a cosmetic reinvention. It looked like the beginning of a wrestler learning how far he is willing to go after discovering that the old version of himself was no longer enough.

The unsettling part is that Rodgers might not fully understand it yet.

He showed flashes against Khan, but flashes don’t win championships. If Rodgers wants this transformation to become more than a look, he must learn how to reach that place deliberately—and remain there when the match becomes desperate.

If he can, the loss to Khan may eventually be remembered as the first warning.

There is danger in a veteran who believes he has nothing left to protect. There is even more danger in one who has already been buried and no longer fears where the next fight might take him.
