Mathias Stood Guard at the Gates of WWE’s Devil’s Playground

Two nights after showcasing his power at AWF Summer Explosion, Mathias found himself surrounded by steel—and caught between two of WWE’s most dangerous monsters.
The steel descended. Brock Lesnar remained outside. Oba Femi stood locked within it.
And in the shrinking space between The Beast and The Ruler stood a familiar face from AWF: Mathias.
“Standing Guard,” Mathias called it in his Facebook post.
Technically, that was his assignment. But security suggests order—and there was none inside the Intuit Dome on Monday night.
Mathias was part of the in-ring security detail during the final weigh-in between Lesnar and Femi ahead of their Hell in a Cell match at SummerSlam. With Mathias and the rest of the detail already inside the structure, Lesnar refused to enter. Instead, he locked the Cell from the outside and taunted Femi through the steel.
Then The Beast walked away.
Femi’s rage remained trapped inside.
When The Ruler finally erupted, the security surrounding him became collateral damage. Bodies hit the canvas as the 302-pound destroyer tore through the men placed there to contain him.
Mathias had been dropped directly into the darkness of WWE’s most chaotic rivalry—a war between two men seemingly built to destroy everything standing between them.
The timing made the appearance even more striking.
Just two nights earlier, Mathias made his AWF debut against Ca$h Cartier at Summer Explosion in Phoenix. His power was obvious, but it was the athleticism behind it that demanded attention. Mathias didn’t simply look imposing. He moved with speed, force and confidence, appearing to be in peak form under the AWF lights.
Forty-eight hours later, he was standing inside Hell in a Cell on Monday Night Raw.
WWE placed Mathias there to help illustrate the danger surrounding Lesnar and Femi. Yet he never looked swallowed by the moment. Surrounded by WWE stars, television cameras and cold steel, Mathias looked like a man who belonged in the frame.
That is sometimes how the door opens.
First, you’re assigned to hold the monsters back. Then people begin wondering what would happen if the guard stopped protecting everyone else—and stepped into the darkness himself.
Phoenix, the question is yours:
Would you like to see Mathias enter “the Devil’s Playground”?
